OWLGraph documentation

OWLGraph builds a typed knowledge graph from your sources and answers questions from it, returning the passages each answer rests on and the steps taken to reach them.

There are two ways in. Most people use the dashboard, which needs no code. If you are connecting your own software, start with the connection reference.

  1. Create a database in the dashboard.
  2. Add your sources as links, then review and approve the structure OWLGraph proposes from them.
  3. Ask questions in the Chat tab and read the citations under each answer.

Connecting to your database is the reference for the HTTP routes and the MCP endpoint, including which host and which header. The short version: requests go to https://api.owlgraph.ai and carry an X-OWLGraph-Key header. There is also a developer summary on the main site.

Terminal window
curl -X POST "https://api.owlgraph.ai/api/v1/databases/YOUR_DATABASE_ID/query" \
-H "X-OWLGraph-Key: owlg_sk_..." \
-H "Content-Type: application/dql" \
-d '{ works(func: type(CreativeWork)) { title } }'

The Python SDK is not published on PyPI, so pip install owlgraph-core does not currently work. The SDK reference documents its interface, which is accurate as a description and not yet usable as an install.

  • Core concepts is the mental model: typed entities, ontology-guided retrieval, evidence chains.
  • Introduction to OWL goes underneath that, to the ontology itself. You do not need it to use OWLGraph, and you will want it when you start shaping a domain deliberately.

The ontology is the schema rather than configuration for it. Loading an ontology is what configures the database: the engine derives its predicates, indices and reasoning rules from the OWL file.

So you do not spend time looking for it:

  • File upload. Sources are added by URL. Uploading your own documents is not yet supported.
  • gRPC. Not exposed on any host or port.
  • Per-database hostnames. Addresses of the form {id}.db.owlgraph.ai do not serve. Use api.owlgraph.ai.
  • Team and seat management. There is no way to invite people to an account or assign roles.
